The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is the only museum in the world solely dedicated to human rights issues.
Based in Winnipeg, Canada, the building itself is a visionary marvel imbued with symbolism. Its spiralling design takes visitors on an upward journey, progressing from darkness to light. This progression serves as a metaphor for the struggle toward fully realized human rights for all, where one is immersed in remarkable stories of hardship, perseverance, integrity and bravery.

This museum is more than just artifacts, it’s a place built to engage people in the stories of others, encourage reflection on what they’ve witnessed, and to spark dialogue.
Our goal from the start was to create a virtual expression of the museum experience so the website not only promotes the values of reflection and dialogue but also adheres to a range of visual cues from the journey through the physical space.

Our visits to the museum offered a deeper source of inspiration as well. Typography and graphic devices were an obvious choice, but it was just as important to capture some of the more subtle elements. Much focus was placed on providing space for moments of reflection and prompting further thought.

The appearance of the site echoes much of the museum’s exhibit structure and displays content with a subtle sense of layers, reflecting the depth of information to explore and reinforcing a seamless experience between the real and the virtual.

With an astonishing breadth of content in the museum, the website had to be robust and flexible enough to handle everything from online shopping and operational info to an ever-growing series of long-form articles and in-depth stories.
Our efforts to bring these stories to the world resulted in a 650% increase in user dwell time within the first year after launch.
